Do You Need To Fire Your Content?

What is your web content doing?  Is it simply taking up space on the page or is it working for you?  Did you spend as much time and/or money on your website content as you did on your graphics and design?

Christie BrinkleyLibrarianIt seems that many people feel the content on their site is something that they have to put in there to make it look like they have something to say, but they are relying on their catchy design and bold graphics to do all the work.  Design is very important in a website but so is your content.  You can think of your graphics and design as your pretty spokes-model that will help set the mood and guide your visitors while your content is the bespeckled librarian that is going to give them all the information they came looking for.  They work as a team.

The content on your site should be doing one or more of these things.

  • Making sales.
  • Generating leads.
  • Making tasks easier for your web visitors.
  • Solving problems for readers.
  • Educating.

(Did I miss anything?)

Assign your content a job and make sure that it performs.  If it is not performing, fire it and get some new content.  For those of you that are now in the market for some new content, there are a few things you can do.

  1. Hire a freelance writer.  Make sure that whoever you hire has an understanding of your products and services and what your goals are.  A good place to start looking is AboutFreelanceWriting.com.  Here you can find a list of freelance writers and their specialties as well as post your job.
  2. Write it yourself.  If you wrote the bad content in the first place, make sure you do some studying up before sitting down at the keyboard this time.  Subscribe to blogs for writers to pick up some tips.  Read articles about writing web copy and really focus on what you want your content to do for you.
  3. Another way to add quality content to your site is through the use of articles.  There are tons of directories out there where you can find articles to use on your site providing you keep the author’s bio or resource box attached.  Be careful to use articles that are complimentary to your products or services and not those that could compete for your visitor’s purchase.  A few of the top article directories are EzineArticles.com, GoArticles.com, and SearchWarp.com.
